Holds (also Hold notes or Held notes) are a gimmick in Rhythm Doctor. Instead of just one pulse, there is now a hold with a set duration on every beat, followed by a hit with the same length on the 7th beat. Every individual beat has its own hold and release cue, which can also overlap between beats. Usually, holds are combined with Row Xs in a <code>-x-x-x</code> or <code>-xx-xx</code> pattern.

The Rhythm Doctor Level Editor (also called 'RDLE' or just 'Editor') is the primary way to create custom levels for Rhythm Doctor. It is built into the Steam version of the game, but also exists as a free standalone with less features.

How to use
The Editor consists of three main parts: The Timeline, where you place events that control the contents of a level by clicking anywhere on it, the Event window, where you can select the events you want to place and modify them as wanted, and the Preview window, allowing you to see a preview of your level. The preview window only refreshes, if playback is started anew. There's multiple ways to do this, for example clicking on one of the yellow 'skip' buttons under the preview window, or by clicking a bar number on the timeline.

You can find a dedicated (albeit slightly outdated) tutorial here.
Freeze beats require no additional sound cues; rather, the cues are built into the freeze beat itself. Immediately after a hit in a pattern of regular oneshots, the row is overlaid with a faint ice pattern and a special cue sound effect plays. After a delay, the ice pattern gets less transparent and the second half of the cue sound plays. When the next oneshot would normally be hit, instead the row freezes and a third sound cue plays. After the same amount of time that was between the first two cues, the row unfreezes and the player must hit the beat. The pattern then continues as normal afterwards as if the hit was not offset.

The various pieces of a freeze beat are visible within the beat on the row's timeline. The green and cyan indicators show where the oneshot would normally start and end to match the rest of the pattern. The two red dots show when the initial cue will occur; the first red dot should line up with the previous hit in the oneshot pattern. The yellow indicator is where the actual hit will occur.

In the beat options, the Delay field determines the time between the regular hit and the actual hit (the distance between the red dots and the distance between the cyan and yellow indicators). Oneshot beats (also SVT Beats) are the secondary gameplay style in Rhythm Doctor and consist of one or multiple pulses, and one hit. The rhythm of the hits is determined by a "Ready Get Set Go!" cue, however the rhythm of the pulses may change without warning to throw you off. A oneshot pattern usually goes on until it is stopped with a "Stop" cue, or changed to another pattern.
Cueing
A oneshot pattern is always preceded by either the nurse or Ian saying "(Rea - Dy -) Get - Set - Go", and it continues until an "(And -) Stop" cue from the same voice as the cue-in, a different oneshot or squareshot cue-in from the same voice as the cue-in, or the final input of the level.

The pattern of the cues shadows the pattern of the oneshots to follow. "Rea" and "Get" nominally line up with a oneshot pulse (green marker in the editor), and "Dy" and "Set" line up with a hit (yellow marker). After a "Go" cue, the pattern starting from the first "Rea" or "Get" cue of a pattern until the "Go" cue is looped continuously as oneshot pulses and hits, and the player must input accordingly. Since only the positions of the "Dy" and "Set" cues along with the interval of the pattern ultimately determine the hit timing, the pattern of the pulses does not necessarily need to follow the "Rea" and "Get"s exactly.

Starting from the end of a cue-in pattern, all intended hits must be "Set"s until a pulse is encountered, which must be a "Get". From there, all preceding pulses must be "Gets" until the preceding hit, which must be a "Dy". Then from there, all pulses must be "Rea"s, and all hits must be "Dy"s. A pattern must not end in "Rea" or "Get", nor start with "Go".

Remember: "Rea" = Pulse, "Dy" = Hit, "Get" = Pulse, "Set" = Hit, "Go" = Pulse.

"Rea - Dy" is generally included in faster patterns to provide more reaction time, or in complex patterns that cannot be cued-in using "Get - Set - Go" alone. The two different cue-in voices allow for two simultaneous oneshot or squareshot patterns, typically on different rows.

A "Set - Go" cue-in can be used to reinitiate the previous oneshot pattern.

The combined "And Stop" event is not recommended because it doesn't sync to the bpm. Instead use the "And" & "Stop" events seperately.

History
*

Trivia
* Oneshots are inspired by, and very similar to the classic percussion pattern of a kick drum on beats 1 and 3, as well as a snare or clap on beats 2 and 4. ("Boom Tschak")

Description
Syncopation is a gimmick stemming from Classic beats. Syncopation typically involves the player hitting on the 6.5th beat, with a 7 pulse beat being offset by half the beat's Tick on one pulse (1-2-3-4-5-67). Like Classic beats, Syncopation can be affected by Swing, Insomniac Beats, Free Times, and Row Xs (check cueing section for restrictions).
Levels
* Meet and Tweet
Cueing
Syncopation is most commonly cued with distinct beat sounds to audibly indicate where the Syncopation is. Additionally, Xs can be put onto the row, however, they cannot mute any beat in which these sounds should be played (e.g. beats 1, 3, 5 for "Beep" sounds). "Chirp" is less restrictive than "Beep" in this sense as it only has sounds on the syncopation, rather than on every two beats up until the syncopation. However, "Beep" is recommended as it's more standard in custom levels. With "Chirp", "Cue modifier changes" is required when the Syncopation is added or removed to a row, i.e. it is not required if the Syncopation is moved to a different beat (e.g. switching from 1-2-3-4-5-67 to 1-2-3-4-56-7).

Syncopation has two different visual cues: a green arrow on the row on the beat that is syncopated, and a yellow glow on the row. At least one of these visuals cues must be used, and both can be used at the same time for additional clarification. Using a green arrow is a built-in mechanic in the Set Row Xs event, therefore normal classic beats can be used and the syncopation and its sounds will be done automatically. If not, then freetimes must be used to execute the behaviour.
History
* Syncopation arrows were introduced alongside X-MAT.
Trivia
* Syncopation had long existed as a semi-official mechanic before the introduction of syncopation arrows, having special cue sounds included in the Level Editor despite not appearing in any official levels.
| Duration || Duration (Float) || How much time the sign will appear on the screen.
|}

Sign Text
<br> The sign text is a text box that shows text on the sign. The text box doesn't have any limits, but only shows some parts of the text in the sign. You can have the maximum of 2 lines, and 44 characters per line.

Duration
<br> The duration can be switched between seconds and beats by clicking on the "Beats" text. The maximum duration for both Beats and Seconds can be 9999999 (7 digits).

Advanced
The sign text supports RD Code which can be used to tell BPM drifts using the {bpm} variable or it can be used to say the score of your RDCode level, for example in Beans Hopper.
<br> The text that the sign will show. Works the same as Sign Text
<br> How much time the sign will appear on the screen. Works the same as Duration.
useBeats (boolean)
<br> If true, uses beats in the duration instead of seconds.

narrate (boolean)
<br> Currently it doesn't do anything but it is most likely related to the upcoming narration feature.

Description

History
*This level first appeared in the closed beta under the name Delay Pedal 2.
**It had Barista as the Oneshot row instead of Cole and Nicole, and Samurai as the main classic row, with the exception of the Intimate motif, which was Logan. <!--this could be worded better-->
**After the dialogue, the Oneshot pattern was cued with a simple "Get Set Go", since modern Oneshot cueing standards weren't in place yet.
**This proto-Squareshot pattern, after a few loops, would change again, adding a third oneshot per bar. This third pattern was not adapted into the Steam version of the game though.

Trivia
* This is the first and only level to make use of Logan's alternate 'hit' sprite, where he looks to the left, raises his hand, and smiles with his eyes open. This animation has been present within the Level Editor prior to its first main game use.
* The C-rank title may be a reference to another one of 7th Beat Games games, A Dance of Fire and Ice.
* The post-clear text states that there are "four patients", however there are actually five patients as the Samurai appears briefly in this level. This may be an oversight.
About the Game
Rhythm Doctor is a 2D, pixel-styled rhythm game, developed and published by 7th Beat Games and Indienova. The game was released in early access on Steam and Itch.io on the 26th of February, 2021, for Windows and MacOS, and remains updated with new additions, bug fixes, and further development.

In Rhythm Doctor, players have to accurately press their spacebar respective to a variety of different beat types and gimmicks layered over a music track within each unique level of the game. It also allows players to customize their own character sleeve with its built-in sleeve editor.

Rhythm Doctor will be 7th Beat Games' second major published game, and was originally a free Flash game inspired by Rhythm Heaven, made during college summer breaks from 2011 to 2012. The first online version was released at the end of 2012.

The game received overwhelmingly positive feedback on Steam during its early access release, and has ultimately been praised for its unique story and characters, gameplay mechanics, visuals, and soundtrack.

The game includes a Level Editor, which is also available for free download without purchasing the game. It allows players to create their own levels, which they can upload to the Steam Workshop or to the non-official community Discord server, for others to play. The game supports single-player mode, shared or split screen co-op, full controller support, as well as remote play.

Description
Freeze Beats, otherwise known as Freezeshots, are special Oneshot Beats that delay a hit in a regular Oneshot pattern.

Levels
Freeze beats feature in Act 5 (e.g. 5-2)

Cueing

The Interval field determines the time between the start of the cue and the hit (the distance between the first red dot and the yellow indicator).

History
* Freeze beats were first released in the r18 version of the level editor.

Trivia
* Freeze beats were created in collaboration with the 5th round of RDRPG (a community-run multi-round level making competition) as a required mechanic for the round.
Easter Eggs
Rhythm Dogtor
You can see a secret code in Ada's room, which you can press in order to play a secret level, which is a parody of 3-X One Shift More.
The code is:
→ ← → → ← → ← ← → ← → → ← → ← ←

Hurry Up!
In 3-X "One Shift More", after the line "But they've been waiting for so long", if the player doesn't press the last beat, the Politician's urging can be heard.
; "Oh, come on, make your move! Hurry up!"
; "You can do it, come on! Hurry up!"
; "Any time. Now, come on! Let's go!"
; "Make a move already, would you?"
; "Oh.... bloody hell, hurry up already?"
After that, he'll press the last beat.
Special Sleeves
Entering "nbrights" or "transrights" in the Sleeve Paint screen will change your sleeve to the respective flag.
Christmas Metreenome
When you open the editor on Christmas, the metronome will look like a Christmas tree and the sound will change to bells.
Samurai.
Typing "Samurai." (with the dot and capital S) in the Story Mode select screen or Main Menu will change most text in the game to only display "Samurai." Floating Text events will only display one syllable per line, which will always be "Samurai." The text can also be changed back to normal by typing "Samurai." again.
Heartshot
While selecting a Oneshot Beat in the editor, holding Shift and H will allow you to make the pulse heart-shaped, similar to the final beat of All The Times.
Hidden Editor Characters
In the editor, holding Ctrl, Shift, and Alt and then changing a row's character will allow you to select characters otherwise not shown in the editor, such as Ian or Edega.
it wont let you in
If you repeatedly select a locked level, Edega will tell you to stop.
Hold right/left
If you hold right/left while in level selection for long enough, Edega will tell you to stop.

Comment is an event available in the Sound, VFX, Decoration, and Rooms tabs. Comments typically have no effect on the behavior of a level, and instead serve as a means for level creators to write notes or commentary within the Level Editor.

Show comment on playback
<br>When checked, the comment will automatically display in the editor's left-side panel if the playhead moves past it during playback.

Advanced
Comments can affect a level's behavior if supplied with certain text. These are known as comment commands, and take the form <code>()=>command(arguments)</code>. They function similarly to custom methods, and some comment commands also have equivalent custom methods.

<code>()=>create(CustomParticles/HitExplosion, X, Y)</code>

Creates a hit explosion. Only supported on room 1.
<br>X: x-position of the explosion, expressed as a percentage. (float)
<br>Y: y-position of the explosion, expressed as a percentage. (float)
Creates an explosion of level editor events. Only supported on room 1.
<br>X: x-position of the explosion, expressed as a percentage. (float)
<br>Y: y-position of the explosion, expressed as a percentage. (float)

<code>()=>shockwave(size, X)</code>

Sets the size of heartbeat shockwaves.
<br>X: Size of the shockwaves. Default is 1. (float)
<br>The equivalent custom method is <code>shockwaveSizeMultiplier = X</code>.

<code>()=>shockwave(distortion, X)</code>

Sets the amplitude of the distortion of heartbeat shockwaves.
<br>X: Amplitude of the distortion. Default is 1. (float)
<br>The equivalent custom method is <code>shockwaveDistortionMultiplier = X</code>.

<code>()=>shockwave(duration, X)</code>

Sets the duration of heartbeat shockwaves. Note that each row can only have one active shockwave at a time.
<br>X: length of the shockwaves. Default is 1. (float)
<br>The equivalent custom method is <code>shockwaveDurationMultiplier = X</code>.

<code>()=>trueCameraMove(RoomID, X, Y, Duration, Ease)</code>

Moves the "in-world" camera. This camera is used to pan around themes that extend beyond the edges of the screen (Train, Basement, Roller Disco, Hospital).
<br>RoomID: Affected room, from 0-3. On-top is not supported. (int)

<code>()=>wavyRowsAmplitude(RoomID, Amplitude, Duration)</code>

Sets the amplitude of displacement for the Wavy Rows vfx preset.
<br>RoomID: Affected room, from 0-3. On-top is not supported. (int)
<br>Amplitude: Amplitude of the row displacement. Default is 15. (float)
<br>Duration: Duration in which the amplitude gradually changes from the old to new value. (float)
<br>The equivalent custom method is <code>room[RoomID].wavyRowsAmplitude = Amplitude</code>. However, the custom method lacks a Duration argument and cannot be used for gradual changes.
Beans Hopper (2-B1) is a bonus level in Rhythm Doctor.

Synopsis
2-B1 is a simple mini-game bonus level, in which you have to press the key to make Samurai jump, to dodge the bean box. This mini-game works differently compared to most levels; the rank the player achieves is dependent on their score, which increases by 1 every time the player jumps over the box. If the player ever fails to jump over the box, the level instantly ends. The level will also end if a score of 250 is reached.

While visually different, this mini-game uses a mechanic nearly identical to Oneshots in which the player must listen to the Nurse's "Ready, Get, Set, Go!" cue to jump over the box.
There are several different patterns of Oneshot beats in the level, lasting for a varying amount of inputs, given to the player at random during each level attempt. Only the first twelve inputs are guaranteed to give the same pattern, with any inputs afterward subject to one of many possible patterns. Once the level has been played, the pager will update to reflect the player's current high score.

History
* This level was created by GDColon in the Level Editor. They used the song Let's Practice! from the Rhythm Heaven soundtrack as a placeholder. A remix of said placeholder would end up being the final song for 2-B1.
* At launch, this level had a bug where the player's ranking would start as an S-rank, and would decrease as the level progressed.

Trivia
* According to GDColon, the reason that this level ends when the player achieves a score of 250 is because of issues pertaining to song looping.
* Upon achieving 250 points, the Samurai floats to the air, abruptly ending the mini-game and displaying a message on the rank screen that reads "You Win!!!?"
* This mini-game was inspired by Rhythm Heaven's Endless Games, a place where the player can play rhythm games that go on endlessly, only ending when a certain amount of mistakes are made.
* This mini-game briefly features in Dreams Don't Stop, with Lucky standing to the left of Hailey watching. In the second half, a 'Night Shift' version of the minigame is shown.

Swing (also Swing beats or Heart block) is a gimmick that causes even pulses to occur a set amount of beats earlier or later than a Classic Beat, giving the row an uneven feel. Despite their differing appearance, rows affected by swing have the same hit timing as a Classic Beat of the same tick speed. While swing is not exclusive to any character, the gimmick is associated with Mr. Stevenson and Mrs. Stevenson.
Cueing
Swing has no unique audio cue, but can be identified by listening to the spacing of pulse sounds. Rows affected by swing will also appear to have curved pulses (colloquially referred to as "banana beats") that curve left before a longer pause, and shake into place on the beat after.

To apply swing in the editor, select a Classic Beat, then adjust the "Swing" slider to the appropriate amount of beats or type a value in the text box beside it.

History
*In the flash prototype of Rhythm Doctor, there was no visual cue for swing.

Trivia
*"Banana beats" can also appear in Syncopation and Free Time Beats.
Squareshots are a special type of oneshot which doesn't loop. They can occur at any time, and override any existing oneshots that were cued with the same voice. After being cued, squareshots of the same length as this one may occur at any time uncued, unless a different oneshot was cued after the squareshot cue with the same voice.
Cueing
Squareshots are cued similarly to regular oneshots, except with the "go" cue replaced with a "one". Although cueing future squareshots of the same length are unnecessary (as long as no other oneshots are cued with the same voice), it's generally recommended to do so to avoid catching the player off guard. One way to ease into uncued squareshots is to slowly remove parts of the squareshot cue with each successive squareshot: for example, starting with "get set one", then "set one" a few times, then just the "one" before finally removing the cue altogether.

History
* The iconic "Tonk" sound associated with Squareshots was first seen in RDSRT2.

Trivia
* Squareshots were originally concieved as a method of bringing back the old way of cueing oneshots, where oneshots of the same length could occur at any time (as long as the first one was cued).
Stevenson.
